Awareness and Screening for Non-Communicable Diseases

We work hard to build a welcoming community for all of our stakeholders, believing that friendliness, concern, and personal interest are all important factors in maintaining positive business partnerships. This goes beyond our organization, with much of our efforts and resources being directed toward giving back to the community. We’ve implemented many Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives across the island in order to aid, uplift and empower people from all walks of life, maintaining the high ethical standards of Hemas and fulfilling our true purpose. We are a company with strong links to the provision of healthcare to the general public, and as a part of our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, it was decided to identify an important health issue as our CSR project.

Awareness and Screening for Non-Communicable Diseases 2013 and 2014

We are proud to have initiated an ongoing, extensive program to raise the awareness of health risks posed by Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). It was decided to target employees in the corporate and state sectors who may be at risk of developing NCDs due their way of life, with the aim of providing awareness on the subject including risk factors and ways of mitigating the occurrence of NCDs. Illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, chronic lung diseases, and cardiovascular disease are on the rise in Sri Lanka, and are mainly due to four risk factors: smoking and alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet, lack of physical exercise and stress. Our team includes several doctors, who travel across the island conducting informative seminars for possible at-risk groups, which include private and government employees. The project is carried out in collaboration with resource persons from the Ministry of Health, the private sector as well as Hemas CSR team.

These seminars focus on awareness as well as screening for detecting persons at risk, thereby increasing prevention and early treatment. During the period January 2013 to March 2014, 16 awareness programs were conducted with the participation of over 1500 persons at several private and government institutions and organizations. To support the awareness programs, screening programs were also conducted where the body mass index (BMI), blood pressure checks and blood analysis for glucose and lipid profile were carried out for 1321 persons.
